The Cruise of the Scarlet

Admiralty Mission from the land of Patagonia to the Western colonies.
IN early July the small flotilla of two ships victualed in the Red City and set a course for the colonies in the western sea.   The flag ship Scarlet would be carrying none other than King Michael, Ruler of Patagonia and his royal entourage, along with a significant military escort and a population of colonists bound for the isle of Marnon.
The flotilla.  The Centaur is in the lead and the royal banner of Patagonia can be seen flying from the second ship the Scarlet.  Late July passed and the voyage was uneventful.  The royal family passed the time with games of "India" in the luxurious staterooms aboard the Scarlet.
One morning in early August the Captain of the Centaur signaled the Scarlet that a sail had been spotted on the horizon.  The precaution of calling all hands to stations was necessary as the ships were now in international waters and in the area known as the "crossing".  A portion of the sea wherein common sail traffic was very heavy.  The ship that the captain held in his spyglass appeared to be an Auricanian merchantman sailing S by SW and heavily laden.
The merchantman sailed under the Auricanian colours.  The ship was the Leon, and was rigged very much in the manner of Auricanian merchant vessels.
The ships warily approach.  The merchantman could make for open water and was seriously outgunned if it came to a tussle.  The Centaur shielded the Scarlet from any fire and began to make maneuvers to intercept the foreign nations ship.  But as is usually the case in these sort of encounters the impertinent bastard...
...unleashed an unprovoked cannonade on the Patagonian fleet.

Which responded in kind with cannonades of their own.  In the ensuing battle the royal cargo was never in harms way and in fact.  King Michael attended the side rail mid battle to see the enemy ship pounding the devil out of the Centaur.  He ordered the Scarlet captain Brodeur, to engage as well as he was in need of the cargo on board the Centaur (many said later that in the after telling he actually said cargo of the enemy merchantman. A rather piratical stance for one so noble of birth so the official story is what is mostly in the histories of the time.)
The Centaur, heavily damaged in sail cloth and starboard guns keeps the merchantman from slipping away.  The Leon hauls down the colours and surrenders her cargo of mostly colonists and military conscripts.
The Scarlet in the wake of the Centaur rolls back her gun carriages and clears the gun crews away.  King Michael personally oversaw the requisitioning of material of war from the merchant ship and put aboard a prize crew.
Imagine cannon fire and a raucous noise of naval guns firing broadsides.

In Patagonia The Dusty book tucked away in the attic

In Patagonia

Excerpt from Treachery Strikes House Patagonia

There is treachery in house Patagonia.  The house guard has been struck down with the death of all five standard bearers.  The dead bodies of several house Aurikanian Officer corp from Prince Blake’s retinue were found on the palace grounds.  This was not immediately brought to the attention of neither the king nor his counsel but in due time it was discovered that a gruesome scene had unfolded on the parade grounds of the royal palace.  The Patagonian house standard-bearers were found dismembered with their regalia torn from their command stands. Upon further investigation it appears that insurgents from house Prince Blake’s entourage  had killed the entire Patagonian standard-bearer core. Replacements were immediately found and put in place.
Marching to the sound of the guns the Patagonian army formed up and gave battle to Aracania in a battle that lasted a full evening.

Auricania Patagonia Imagi-Nation Project

It is good when a project nears it's completion and is simply a "go to" set of soldiers and miniatures ready to play out the self styled imagi-Nation that we have created.  My set of RISK minis that I wanted to paint into two imagi-Nation armies is very close to complete.  I am gathering the terrain and revisiting my map set and Auricania Patagonia will be alive.

"La Petite Guerre" French and Indian Wargame II

Our second game of the rules featured a rebuilt stockade fort. I built the blockhouses some 18 years ago and rebuilt the stockade walls just recently in February 2010. Each stick was cut and whittled by hand.

This battle featured French defending and with Courier du Bois and Pirate or Privateer allies.

Attacking were the British and their heroically brave Indian allies.

Pendraken Fleets 1/3000 Scale Ships

Auricania and Patagonia interact with each other through the medium of naval commerce.

Here are some fleet pictures of the miniatures used in our campaign.

Two different control sheets for the game. It is roster based and campaign actions carry over to the next game.

Patagonia-Auricanian Naval Campaign

Recorded here for your enjoyment is the history of a naval campaign set in 1709 in a land far away over the horizon. The forces of Auricania and Patagonia where separated by land mass too complicated to traverse and both fell to ship building and naval expansion. Their meeting would occur on the ocean waves and to the irony of this story both societies had similar structure in culture and in naval development. The three masted ship was the naval development of the age and they set forth with the idea of expansion and new lands to civilize with allegiance to their own crown. Auricania was a monarchy ruled by Queen Madeline. Her royal family included only one heir, Princess Caroline. Auricania held a matriarchal lineage of succession.

Patagonia for it's part, was ruled by the fair and just King Michael. Little else is known of this society at present.  The history of these illustrious nations included much armed conflict and battles that where recounted in detail on the family refrigerator with small magnets.

Patagonian Splendor

When you absolutely have to have an impressive flag that overwhelms explanation and expression go to the clip art site above!

A New Banner Unfurls in The Wind - Long Live Auricania

This is the flag my son designed. Makes a nice battle flag and is recognizable from a distance.

Imagi-Naval An Ocean Bound Campaign Game

This is the map for the Auricanian-Patagonia naval campaign. If follows the principles laid down in the great wargame book,"Sea Battles in Miniature A Guide to Naval Wargaming" by Paul Hogue.
